The Adventure Company: Teens in Turkey

This entry is from Helena Clough, who recently joined her family on our Active Turkey family holiday:

"What!" My dad barked as my mum dropped the bombshell that we were going on an adventure holiday in Turkey. "It's wonderful James" Mum prattled on. "The Adventure Company organise the whole thing!" "Fantastic" my dad said sarcastically, "I can't wait "

The holiday was based in Hotel Linda, Kas, on Turkey's turquoise coast. Our guide was Kamal, an enthusiastic Turk, and we were joined on the trip by three other eager families, all with teenagers.

Day one
After dodging persistent salesmen trying to sell us their carpets, we managed to escape to Kas harbour where we boarded a boat for scuba diving. As this was everyone's first time we each got an instructor to go with us under-water. My mum however refused to do it, but that backfired. Swimming instead, she got stung by a jellyfish, overreacted and thought she was going to die (She didn't).

For the next couple of days we stayed on a traditional Turkish boat- a "Gulet" sailing from Fethiye to Kas. After some of my amazing games (involving jumping off the boat in the style of an animal) the families started to bond and we became really close friends.

On the last night of our boat trip Kamal introduced us to "Raki" an alcoholic drink which he swore cured his liver, yet surely becoming an alcoholic made it worse? No one liked it apart from my brother, although I think he was just trying to show off to the girls on the trip. It didn't work.

Day four.
An early departure from the Gulet, and then Sea Kayaking! With a few groans from my Dad, we set off to the island Kekova where there was a sunken city, deposited by an earthquake into the sea. There were a few arguments between kayak teams, most resulting in a face full of salt water and refusals to paddle! After an hour's paddling we reached a hidden bay. Only one accident occurred- my brother befriended a donkey on the island, however it evidently didn't like him and bit him! One girl gave up and sat on the boat on the way back, probably wisely as earlier she had nearly steered her kayak and brother into a passing ferry!

After waking with aching arms, our guide happily announced that today was Mountain Biking! We drove up a nearby mountain, were allocated our bikes and set off downhill.

Sadly I failed this activity, for after only an hour of dirt track I gave up and sat in the bus. However the views were tremendous, even through the window of an air-conditioned bus! Due to the heat people dropped like flies until only 3 were left cycling (one my dad!) at the end.

The last day was relaxing with swimming in the hotel pool followed by a farewell meal in an atmospheric restaurant, in the moonlit streets of Kas.
