The Adventure Company: Nuptials in Nepal!

Congratulations to Lesley and Simon who recently married after meeting each other on one of our trips.

Photobucket

Lesley and Simon met on our Adventure Nepal tour in February 2005 and married on the 22nd August this year, but Lesley will never forget how it all started.

"We both went away being all independent and not expecting anything romantic but became friends and kept in touch"

Photobucket

Lesley highly recommends travelling solo with The Adventure Company saying:

"You meet other like-minded people and discover so much about yourself. We are still in touch with people from the trek and it was the best thing either of us have ever done. We are always recommending the company to others - especially for single people as you don’t feel out of place and who knows what you might find!".

Photobucket

We hope you will join us in congratulating Lesley and Simon. It looked like a truly wonderful day.

The Adventure Company: Active in Andorra

This August, Terry Davis joined The Adventure Company on the Active Pyrenees Family Holiday,. Here is what he had to say about the trip:

“In respect of the Active in the Pyrenees Adventure I would say this. I have travelled extensively both with work and for pleasure and you can forget some of the exotic locations in the world this holiday really rocked its up there in my top 5.

Photobucket

We stayed in the Hotel Roc De St Miquel. run by Nick & Nuria, Some may see this as a more basic hotel, however its was spotless and extremely well run. Officially a one star but if you add on the atmosphere its a five star.

You really couldn’t want for more from a hotel. Our group commented often that if every hotel had a "Pepe" then they would be better places to stay. If your not sure, he was the barman come waiter, his interaction with the children and his humour was great.

During our first full day we climbed to the top of Pic Maia, had a nice ridge walk during the afternoon. Late afternoon was spent around the hotel, relaxing.

Photobucket

Next we come onto the guides, here the company excelled with the three of them. Stuart, Andy & Sarah. Informative, interactive, very well briefed and very good at briefing. They also gelled the group and got the best out of the children and developed the confidence of the children. A real pleasure to see them work and interact with the children. Some might say old fashioned, but they genuinely enjoyed what they done, were real fun to be around and do the activities with. They are treasures and should be protected.

With Nick in the background the organisation was impressive, slick, always on time and very well run. The equipment was well serviced and to a high standard.

This was especially true of the bikes we used in the middle of the trip, through the Ordino Valley, which was an old iron route, so the ride took us past old mines and forges. Throughout the whole day, the guides were there to support us, and help weave us through the cycle paths.

Photobucket

Taking a 4WD out to Port De Cabus, which followed the old smugglers routes was also really memorable. However, the white-water rafting towards the end of the day was the most fun.

Photobucket

The last day was spent wandering through the Incles Valley, the sight of the mountain horses grazing was a lovely .

At the end of the holiday, the other half of those that came away come down to the Roc for the last night, these people had been staying up the road in the 4 star. They arrived just after our dinner and we were joined by the guides.

They saw the games the children playing, Pepe being challenged on the football (Good ole fashioned table football cards draughts, not a gameboy in sight) one said to me, "is this the atmosphere you have had each night" the reply was yes and you could see how much they had missed out on.

This holiday for myself and my son, has been fantastic, its a holiday that I truly have not stopped raving about to both friends and family."

Terry and his family took part in the Active Pyrenees Family Holiday (Product Code FPS.

The Adventure Company: Teens in Turkey

This entry is from Helena Clough, who recently joined her family on our Active Turkey family holiday:

Photobucket

"What!" My dad barked as my mum dropped the bombshell that we were going on an adventure holiday in Turkey. "It's wonderful James" Mum prattled on. "The Adventure Company organise the whole thing!" "Fantastic" my dad said sarcastically, "I can't wait "

Photobucket

The holiday was based in Hotel Linda, Kas, on Turkey's turquoise coast. Our guide was Kamal, an enthusiastic Turk, and we were joined on the trip by three other eager families, all with teenagers.

Photobucket

Day one
After dodging persistent salesmen trying to sell us their carpets, we managed to escape to Kas harbour where we boarded a boat for scuba diving. As this was everyone's first time we each got an instructor to go with us under-water. My mum however refused to do it, but that backfired. Swimming instead, she got stung by a jellyfish, overreacted and thought she was going to die (She didn't).

Photobucket

For the next couple of days we stayed on a traditional Turkish boat- a "Gulet" sailing from Fethiye to Kas. After some of my amazing games (involving jumping off the boat in the style of an animal) the families started to bond and we became really close friends.

Photobucket

On the last night of our boat trip Kamal introduced us to "Raki" an alcoholic drink which he swore cured his liver, yet surely becoming an alcoholic made it worse? No one liked it apart from my brother, although I think he was just trying to show off to the girls on the trip. It didn't work.

Photobucket

Day four.
An early departure from the Gulet, and then Sea Kayaking! With a few groans from my Dad, we set off to the island Kekova where there was a sunken city, deposited by an earthquake into the sea. There were a few arguments between kayak teams, most resulting in a face full of salt water and refusals to paddle! After an hour's paddling we reached a hidden bay. Only one accident occurred- my brother befriended a donkey on the island, however it evidently didn't like him and bit him! One girl gave up and sat on the boat on the way back, probably wisely as earlier she had nearly steered her kayak and brother into a passing ferry!

Photobucket

After waking with aching arms, our guide happily announced that today was Mountain Biking! We drove up a nearby mountain, were allocated our bikes and set off downhill.

Photobucket

Sadly I failed this activity, for after only an hour of dirt track I gave up and sat in the bus. However the views were tremendous, even through the window of an air-conditioned bus! Due to the heat people dropped like flies until only 3 were left cycling (one my dad!) at the end.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The last day was relaxing with swimming in the hotel pool followed by a farewell meal in an atmospheric restaurant, in the moonlit streets of Kas.

The Adventure Company: Egyptian Adventure

Emma Cross, who works in Accounts here at The Adventure Company recently packed her bags and travelled to Egypt, where she took part in our Felucca Adventure tour.

Photobucket

This entry sums up just some of her experience:

"I didn't realise quite how vibrant the colours used on the temples were, and I was amazed how colourful some of them are, after all this time. Its amazing knowing I've stood beneath the work of some of the world's greatest architects! And it was nice to find out more about them when we visited the Egyptian Museum and the Tutankhamen collection they have there.

Photobucketbr>
Before travelling to Egypt I was already aware that the pyramids were just on the outskirts for Cairo but I mostly loved the greenery which was stark in contrast compared to all the other photos you get of the great pyramid.

Photobucket

One of my favourite moments of the trip would have to have been the two days spent sailing the Nile on a felucca (boat) from Aswan towards Luxor. The slow pace and gentle breeze gave an enjoyable break to enable me to unwind and soak up the culture along the banks of the Nile. So lovely to see the little villages that are nestled along the banks of the river, just pass by. We slept on the boat deck too, sleeping under the stars was just beautiful.

Photobucket

It was spending time on the Felucca that gave the group time to get to know each other. It's a pretty small group anyway, which meant you really got to know one another, and the chance to make friendships that you'll never forget.

Photobucket

Another amazing experience involved getting up early to take a donkey ride to the Valley of the Kings (on the west bank of the Nile from Luxor). This was so fun. The Valley of the Kings was very busy but travelling by donkey to a point to over look the valley and then walk down into it gave a unique perspective and was nice to be away from the crowds .The route you follow is the same as those who actually built the tombs too!

Photobucket

Photobucket

was so bustling, full of ancient mosques, fez makers, rice sellers, and bazaars, which we immersed ourselves in, and haggled amongst. It really was the most culturally rich way to end a trip that I'll truly never forget"

The Adventure Company: Back To Chengdu

Claire Wilson, Managing Director at The Adventure Company, and her family were one of the first groups to go back into Chengdu after the earthquake. She took part in our Land of The Dragon Family Holiday

'We felt like real adventurers- being one of the first groups back into see the Panda Conservation Centre, Chengdu TV sent out a film crew to interview us'

Photobucket

Below are her thoughts on the destination, and a few pictures of her stay whilst she was there:

"We came back just as the final preparations were being done for the Olympics - Beijing had had quite a make over and the air quality was much improved over the period of our visit.

The trip wasreally "China" in a nutshell' because you see such a range of places and people, but also includes all the major 'must see' sights. The Great Wall was an amazing sight!

Photobucket

So too were the Terracotta Warriors - we got to meet the original farmer that first unearthed the terracotta warriors.

There are still so many relics to be unearthed from this site and things to see.

Photobucket

Luckily the itinerary lets you take in all the landmark sights, including this site, but the most notable being The Great Wall of China

The scale of both are awesome and with Terracotta Warriors it's incredible to think there is some much still to be unearthed by future generations.

The city of Xian was really exciting with some vast city walls that are still intact- fun to cycle round the top of them.

My family loved this trip and so will any inquiring and energetic families with a penchant for culture, discovery and exploration.

There's different sight and experiences on offer everyday, so that you really get the feeling that you've seen China in a nutshell over the course of two weeks.

You'll experience everything from misty mountains contoured by rice terraces through to large and vibrant cities such as Xian and Beijing steeped in their own rich cultural history.

But for many of the kids on the trip the Panda Conservation Centre in Chengdu was their highlight with a chance to get up close to this endangered species.

Photobucket

You're on the move most of the time with this trip, using a mix of transport from internal flights, bicycles, bamboo rafts, coaches, and an overnight sleeper train, but that's part of the fun of discovery.

Photobucket

There are lots of optional activities available too, if you can squeeze them
in, especially when you get to Yangshuo. This trip ideally suits families with slightly older children of 7 and above mainly because of the travelling involved.

Loved the mountain scenery too and seeing the rice terraces.A busy trip but very very memorable!"
